Borrow the Moon

The Borrow the Moon programme offers schools, educational institutions and community groups across the UK the opportunity to borrow real lunar and meteorite samples collected during NASA’s Apollo missions. The program, active since the 1980s, is designed to inspire students through hands-on science learning, from early years to post-16 education. The week-long loan is free of charge and comes with risk assessments, display materials, and lesson plans designed to support the national curriculum in science and geography.

Activities in the kit include crater-making experiments, edible meteorites, and prompts for Moon landing debates that spark curiosity and critical thinking. The tactile experience of handling space rocks often leaves a lasting impression. Whether you’re planning a STEM week, a space-themed topic, or simply want to inspire awe in your group, Borrow the Moon is a powerful way to connect learners with real-world science and space exploration.
